401k after tax

After-tax contributions in a 401k plan are quite different from pre-tax contributions. If an employee elects to make after-tax contributions, the money comes out of net pay after tax. (i.e., after taxes have been deducted). While it doesn’t benefit or impact the employee’s current tax situation, funds that were contributed on an after-tax basis may be easier to access or withdraw since they are not subject to the firm IRS rules and laws which apply to more traditional pre-tax contributions. When distributions are are taken (see below), the employee pays zero tax on the part of the distribution for which the employee has made 401k after-tax contributions, but does have to pay tax on any gains or market value increase.

It is very important to consider your options with 401k after tax contributions especially when considering a 401k rollover after separation of service or retirement.  At that time, many employees feel that they would benefit from taking the 401k after tax contributions in the form of a check while rolling the pre-tax monies to a 401k rollover.
